Occupational Diver - Pool Cleaning/Maintenance/Refurbishment

If you work underwater as a diver breathing compressed gas from any source then you need to apply for a Worksafe Certificate of Competency (CoC). This includes occupational diving involving underwater repairs, construction, cleaning, and refurbishment on pools, which many pool maintenance companies offer.

Occupational diving is defined as diving that is carried out at work for gain or reward. It involves the diver breathing gases (usually air) at greater than atmospheric pressure under water. A place of work is defined as a place where people work for gain or reward. This includes a beach, river, boat, pool or any place where diving for gain or reward is carried out. Gain or Reward includes payment, but could also include other services such as where a diver is given a ‘free trip’ in return for providing the work.

To be eligible for a CoC you must hold a Rescue Diver certificate or above, as well as having received a medical clearance to dive from the Diving Hyperbaric Medical Service (DHMS) in Auckland, and a good character reference.

We here at NZ Dive School have put together a dedicated course to help get you certified to work as an occupational diver in New Zealand. This includes training to Rescue Diver, handling application paperwork and assisting in your journey after certification.

This course includes:

  • SSI Open Water Diver
  • SSI Diver Stress and Rescue
  • Fees payment to Worksafe and Occupational Diver Medical Examiner
  • Assistance in managing paperwork for Worksafe and Dive Medical Application
  • Discounts on diving equipment
  • A 10 fill concession card to refill tanks

Optional:

  • First Aid Certification (if not already certified - required for Rescue Course) + $150

Please note: while we will assist in your application to Worksafe and do our best to achieve a positive outcome, we cannot guarantee that Worksafe will grant the CoC. You may be denied in cases where your medical is not approved, you have past or pending criminal offences relevant to duties as an occupational diver, have previously been denied/suspended from a CoC, engaged in any unlawful activity while diving occupationally, etc.
